Reimagining Tradition, Honouring Textile Heritage
Malaysia, a country woven together by vibrant cultures and histories, is home to a vast tapestry of textile heritage – many of which remain hidden, even to its own people. Beginning in 2024, the IKAT 2.0 embarked on a year-long journey to illuminate these untold stories across Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor. Through collaborations with artisans, new media artists, educational institutions, and subject matter experts, IKAT 2.0 bridged the past and present, offering a refreshing perspective on these age-old crafts, inviting the audiences to explore, experience and connect with these unique stories woven into every thread.
How do we inspire younger generations to appreciate and continue these beautiful narratives?
The IKAT 2.0 took the form of a dynamic, pop-up textile experiential hub, touring Malaysia’s key cities with each edition spotlighted a distinct textile tradition unique to a different state.
The publicity strategy behind IKAT 2.0’s was to cultivate a deeper and lasting appreciation for Malaysia’s rich textile heritage, particularly among younger generations. In Kuala Lumpur, curiosity was ignited through a curated teaser outreach, media launch, engaging interviews and collaborations with key opinion leaders, setting the campaign in motion. The Penang Edition focused on precise media outreach, targeting both local and national outlets while working closely with influencers to generate authentic, community-driven content. In Johor, the approach was centered on inviting key media outlets, complemented by post-event dissemination, ensuring the cultural narrative extended well beyond the event.
The strategy centered on storytelling, emphasising the fusion of tradition and technology, bridging the old and new, and strategically aligned with the celebrations of Merdeka and Malaysia Day. The narrative was meticulously crafted to engage audiences effectively, while a multi-faceted approach was deployed to ensure broad visibility across various audience segments throughout the country.
IKAT 2.0 made a significant impact in fostering deeper appreciation for Malaysia’s textile heritage through a strategically executed communication campaign. All the efforts garnered extensive media coverage, including notable features in mainstream publications across multiple languages. Its widespread presence on social media further amplified public engagement and renewed interest in textile heritage.
